![]() War: World War II Staff Sergeant Robert R. Lansing June 25, 1924 – March 8, 1944 Robert was born to Robert & Grace Lansing of Dyer. Growing up, he enjoyed playing the trumpet in the St. John Township High School Band. Out of school he traveled the Tri-Town area playing his trumpet as an entertainer. On Sept. 3, 1942, Robert enlisted in the Army Air Force, training to be a flight engineer of a B-24 Bomber. Later he was sent to fight in the Pacific with the 380BG(H), 529SWDN(H), 5th Air Force. As a Staff Sergeant on a bombing mission to Wewak, New Guinea, his aircraft was attacked by Japanese fighters and disappeared from sight. He was reported missing in action as of Mar. 8, 1944, and presumed dead Jan. 26, 1946. Robert expressed his love of flying in his letters. In one letter he wrote, “Don’t every worry.
