Corporal James W. Farmer February 23, 1931 – October 13, 1950

James was born to James & Iva Mae Farmer of Owensboro, Kentucky. His family moved to Dyer, where Jim attended Dyer High School. In Jan. of 1949, Jim enlisted in the Army. His basic training was at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, with the 101st Airborne. In April 1949, after basic training, he sailed to Japan, where he was trained in phases of field artillery weapons and tactics. With the Korean War beginning, his unit was shipped to Korea in July of 1950. After three months of fighting with the 77th Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Cav. Division, Jim was killed in action on Oct. 13, 1950 near Paechon, Korea. Jim is buried at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary, Indiana.

Jim was devoted to his mother and his country. Before he left for war, Jim had two tattoos inscribed on his arms: a heart with the word “Mother,” and an American Flag with the word “Army.”
