The Erie Lackawanna Trail runs from Hammond to Crown Point. The total amount of mileage the trail spans is about 17 miles. Roughly three (3) of those miles pass through Schererville. Coming from Griffith, the path starts near the Lake of the Meadows Subdivision. From there, the path follows along Burr Street, with a tunnel providing access underneath US 30. The trail then goes into the Pine Island Subdivision and continues on into Crown Point.
Parking in Schererville for the trail is readily available on Burr Street, just south of where it intersects with Joliet Street. Two shelters are close to the parking area, along with drinking fountains. Other parking areas are available in Crown Point or additional spots along the trail.
In the summer of 1847, Nicholas and Susana Hilbrich came to America from Germany and settled in an area of Lake County, Indiana, which is now known as Schererville. Upon arrival, Nicholas Hilbrich built a log home from 8” x 12” hand-hewn oak logs. Through the years, the home was added on to and remodeled, but the original log home remained in the center of the house. One would not know driving by the house in subsequent years that a “log cabin” was hidden inside. Ownership of the home and property remained in the Hilbrich family for generations until it was sold in 2007.
The new owner of the home had plans for demolishing the structure. Once knowledge of the log cabin became known to town officials, an effort was made to “save” the cabin. The new owner agreed to let the town have the cabin with the condition that it would be relocated. Officials decided that the most appropriate location for the cabin would be at the recently acquired Scherwood Park. Numerous fundraisers were held to assist in the cost of relocating the cabin and after much coordination, the journey to its new location was held in July of 2008. Many onlookers were present along the route as the cabin trekked slowly down 77th Street and proceeding north on Austin Avenue, crossing busy highway US 30, to its destination off of Joliet Street at Scherwood Park.
The Hilbrich Log Cabin is believed to be the oldest home in Schererville and possibly in Lake County, Indiana. The Cabin was fully restored by Fall 2016 and the grand opening was held on October 26, 2016. Tours and visits to the cabin can be arranged through the Schererville Parks Department.
The Pennsy Greenway is a trail that runs all the way from Calumet City, Illinois to Rohrman Park in Schererville Indiana. Currently, the trail is split into three separate sections for the time being, although plans are being considered to continue working on linking the trail system into a whole. The Schererville section of the Pennsy Greenway stretches from Wilhelm Street near the Police Department, past Redar park, goes underneath US 30, and finally culminates at Rohrman Park. This stretch of the Pennsy Greenway is approximately 2.1 miles in length.
Parking is available on Reiplinger Road near the Police Station and the Schererville Skate Park, at Redar Park, and at Rohrman Park. Those who are walking dogs will also be able to find waste disposal bag stations along the route as well.
Pennsy Trail Phases 2 & 3
Construction started on Phases 2 & 3 of the Pennsy Trail in 2019 and were completed by August 2020. The two phases of the trail extend from Main Street in Munster to Wilhelm Street near the Schererville Police Department parking lot, completing the “gap” between the two existing sections of the Pennsy Trail. Phase 2 runs from Main Street to 213th Street and Eagle Ridge Drive behind Briar Ridge. Phase 3 continues with a separate, pedestrian crossing over the CN railroad tracks, then proceeds under the US 41 bridge, and connects to the existing trail at Wilhelm Street.
This 3.35 mile trail extension is made possible by $4.85 million in federal transportation grants awarded to the town. Dyer Construction was awarded the bid for this project.
Another grant to help complete Phase 4 of Pennsy Greenway Trail
The final phase of the Pennsy Greenway Northwest Trail through Schererville recently received funding through the state’s Next Level Trails Program grant of $2.91 million. This 2.26-mile part of the trail will start from Rohrman Park going southeast to the town limit at Clark Road, south of 93rd Street.
Because part of the trail goes through unincorporated Lake County, the Town will collaborate with Lake County Parks to complete this section of the larger, regional Pennsy trail system, which when completed will stretch from downtown Lansing, IL to Crown Point.

Precautions and Etiquette
Please Remember: Children 11 and under are not allowed in dog run areas.
- Dogs are unpredictable and feisty. Often dogs do not respond well to people running and yelling. Also, all visitors should always ask the handler before petting a strange dog.
- Entering and exiting a dog park is stressful and exciting for even the most well behaved dogs. Please allow others space to enter and exit before you do. Be sure to securely close all gates behind you.
- After entering the dog park, let your dog off the leash. Leashed dogs feel threatened when they are around unleashed dogs. If you are uncomfortable with letting your dog off leash, do not visit the park. Prong and choke collars must be removed.
- Supervise your dog at all times. When a new dog enters the park, be aware of where your dog is. Don’t allow dogs to congregate around the entrance. Owner must carry one leash in hand per dog (maximum two dogs per person).
- If your dog starts to mount, you must immediately discourage this activity to avoid any aggression problems from other dogs, or leave the park.
- Dog fights are rare, but if one does occur, the best method to break it up is to grab both dogs’ hind legs and direct them in opposite directions. Block any eye contact the dogs make with each other. Dogs that remain unruly or aggressive must be immediately removed from the park.
- If your dog injures another dog or owner, be sure to give your name and phone number to the injured party. You are legally and financially responsible for your dog’s actions and any harm it causes to others. See Dog Incident Policy Below.
- Pick up your dog’s droppings. You must carry extra bags with you. Bags and waste receptacles are also available.
- Be respectful of other dogs and their owners. Do not allow your dog to be a nuisance to other dogs and their owners.
- Dog agility equipment and dog toys are for use by dogs – not for use by owners or handlers.

The Schererville Park Board has approved and adopted the master plan for the Teibel Nature Preserve. You may view the master plan by clicking here: “Teibel Nature Preserve Master Plan”. For more information you can email John at JNovacich@schererville.org or call the Park Office at (219) 865-5530.
It is an exciting time for the Town of Schererville, the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department and the numerous stakeholders involved on this project! It is clear that community leaders are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural environment of the Teibel Nature Preserve while developing an open space which will provide an opportunity for passive recreation and outdoor education that will be a unique asset to the community. This master plan describes the results of the planning process and later, presents a series of opportunities for capital and environmental management improvements of the Teibel Nature Preserve Site.
The Teibel Nature Preserve site is used as wetland mitigation for the surrounding residential and commercial developments. In 2008, Richard Teibel donated the property to the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department through the Schererville Parks Foundation. The Schererville 2008-2012 Parks and Recreation Master Plan identified the Teibel Nature Preserve as a future natural area because the northwest quadrant of the Town of Schererville is significantly deficient in the amount of recommended open space per resident. This area of Schererville is densely developed, and the Teibel Nature Preserve offers a unique opportunity to provide open space for the neighborhood and be the first public natural area provided for the Schererville residents by the Parks and Recreation Department.
The site is regionally located between the Plum Creek Forest Preserve, Hoosier Prairie Nature Preserve, Oak Ridge Prairie County Park, and the Pennsy Greenway. These offer high quality natural environments and allow Teibel Nature Preserve to become an extension of the green corridor that serves as habitat for wildlife and migratory birds.
In order to fund the Teibel Nature Preserve Master Plan, the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department applied for and secured an Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Coastal Grant to develop the master plan for the site. After being awarded the grant, the Schererville Parks and Recreation Department engaged Hitchcock Design Group
to lead a team including DLZ and Cardno JFNew, recognized leaders in the fields of landscape architecture, land planning, stormwater engineering and ecological assessments to undertake the master plan.
